Students have the following extra credit opportunities: These are intended to expand a child's experiences while at the same time improve their grade.
1) Christmas Adopt a Family Prep: This is a wonderful community building opportunity that will count as a 100% replacement for the lowest homework grade in Social Studies or Language Arts for term 2. The sixth grade classrooms attempt to adopt Mason families for Christmas each year. Teachers are given a family wish list for each family as well as a food list to help make the holidays healthy and fun for each family. We would like to decorate and label the boxes that will be filled with goodies for our adopted families. The official date is November 13, 2017 immediately after school for about one hour. Students must come with a roll of wrapping paper and prearrange their ride home.
2) Veteran's Day Essay Paragraph: Veteran's Day is an official United States holiday which honors people who have served in armed services, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11th. If you know a veteran, this is the perfect opportunity to sit down with him/her and show your appreciation by thanking this veteran for their service. Take some time to learn about this individual and share your experience in an essay. This essay will count as a 100% replacement for the lowest grade in Social Studies or Language Arts for term 2. This is due January 18.
3) Rayner Park Fall Cleanup: This is a wonderful community building opportunity that will count as a 100% replacement for the lowest homework grade in Science for term 2. Students will need to complete two hours of park clean up community service on Saturday, November 18 at 12 PM - 2 PM. They need to bring a paper and pencil with them to have signed when they arrive and leave by a person in charge of the clean up. Parents and siblings are welcome to take part. Bring a rake and gloves if you can, but this is not required.
3) Front Row Challenge: This is a terrific math tool available online. If a student logs on to this website at home and practices math for at least one hour during this marking period, it will count as a 100% replacement for the lowest homework grade in math (or add 25 points) for term 2. Students must get a parent signature stating how long he/she practiced on Front Row. Students log in using their first and last name. Students must then use their assigned class code to complete the log in process. This is due January 18.
